In the early 19th century, Ermoupoli on the island of Syros, was one of the wealthiest cities in Greece This was because of the refugees who had come from the islands that had been burned and destroyed during the revolution for independence. The refugees, mainly from Chios, Kasos and Psara, found shelter on Syros. Those who were originally from Syros were poor, mainly Catholic and were mainly found gathered in their castle and its surrounding villages.

Shipowner Giannis Perselis and his captain, Stratis Soropos, are both from Chios. Karmelina Roussou, born and raised on the island, decides to move to the port and live with her uncle and her aunt. There, she meets Stratis’ brother, Nicolas, who loves books and verses, women and revelries, but hates work… On the other hand, Stratis is disciplined, with many responsibilities that burden him from a young age, and engaged to marry Melpo. He will meet Ioulia Peresli, who is looking for refuge on her father’s ship on the day she has escapes from Ermoupoli from an arranged marriage.
