The matchmaking of Julia Venus with landlord Giorgikis Provios was set to be the greatest news and event of Larissa. Η Πολυνίκη αφηγείται την πολυτάραχη ζωή της ή αφήνει κι άλλες φωνές να μιλήσουν για την ίδια. Οι συγκρούσεις με την οικογένειά της, η σκληρή αδελφή, η κακοπαθημένη μάνα, ο αμφιλεγόμενος πατέρας, ο προστάτης νονός της διαμορφώνουν τον χαρακτήρα της.

Ο Πλάτων είναι ο δεκαεφτάχρονος γιος του Αθηναίου παραμυθά, ποιητή και μηχανικού-εφευρέτη Μεγακλή. Ζει μαζί με τον πατέρα του στη Σαγάλα, την ένδοξη πρωτεύουσα του ινδοελληνικού βασιλείου του Μενάνδρου Σωτήρος, το οποίο εξαπλώνεται σε ολόκληρη τη βορειοδυτική Ινδία, από τις παρυφές των Ιμαλαΐων μέχρι την Αραβική Θάλασσα.
Ο Πλάτων έχει ένα μοναδικό χάρισμα: μαθαίνει αμέσως όποια γλώσσα ακούει. Χάρη σε αυτή την ικανότητά του, προσλαμβάνεται από τον πρύτανη της Ακαδημίας στη Σαγάλα, τον στωικό φιλόσοφο Δημήτριο, ως διερμηνέας αλλά και για να κατασκοπεύσει τους διαλόγους του βασιλιά Μενάνδρου με τους μοναχούς που έχουν έρθει προ των πυλών της πόλης και κηρύσσουν μια νέα θρησκεία. Ο νεαρός Πλάτων βρίσκεται μπλεγμένος στα γρανάζια της Ιστορίας, ερωτεύεται μια γυναίκα-φάντασμα και, όταν μαθαίνει για το μυστικό που του έκρυβε ο πατέρας του, καλείται να αποφασίσει αν θα σώσει τελικά το βασίλειο του Μενάνδρου…
